Dear friends and colleagues,
In May and June 2015, the EBMT organised two “Best of EBMT” meetings: one in Saudi-Arabia and another one in China. From the initial half a dozen visionary physicians who established our society in 1974, the EBMT has now grown to include around 4,000 members, and covers more than 500 transplant centres in over 60 countries worldwide. Our successful Annual Meeting is now very highly ranked, motivating colleagues worldwide to organise local events including the so-called “Best of EBMT” sessions. The latter highlights the influence of our society and the top quality of the meeting content.
The “Best of EBMT” meeting in Saudi-Arabia was the 2nd in consecutive years, and proved to be a very popular event, like last year's. During this meeting in Riyadh, a special session was dedicated to the use of the quality management system "JACIE" and its positive impact on outcome after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The comprehensive quality management system JACIE (Joint Accreditation Committee International Society for Cellular Therapy and the European society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation), was introduced by the EBMT more than 10 years ago, and has proved to be among the most successful initiatives associated with improved outcome and care of patients after stem cell transplantation.
The meeting organised in Beijing, China, on the 19th of June 2015, was the first of its kind. EBMT and Chinese speakers managed to deliver the essence of the major topics discussed during EBMT 2015. Actually, the results of the members’ survey named the EBMT 2015 Annual Meeting in Istanbul among the best conferences ever held. This appreciation from our members recognises the hard effort of all stakeholders: small details can make a big difference. The EBMT members are dedicated to improving the outcome of patients with incurable diseases. Therefore, the EBMT is committed to deliver state of the art scientific content to help members to accomplish their mission every day.
The scientific council and board of the association held their June Board Meeting in Barcelona. The major topic of discussion was the design and content of the EBMT 2016 Annual Meeting which will take place in Valencia, Spain from the 3rd to the 6th of April 2016. Building an attractive and up-to-date scientific program according to the wishes of a diverse audience can be a very challenging task! Thanks to the work of the highly skilled local organising committee in Spain led by Prof. M. Sanz (Valencia Congress President), and thanks to the contribution of all EBMT Working Party Chairs, we managed to design a terrific draft program. It aims to address the hottest topics in the field, namely the growing role of immunotherapy and immune-oncology tools, with and without stem cell transplantation. The recently introduced and highly popular sessions such as “Meet the Expert”, “How do I do?” and other special sessions are further enhanced. A major novelty of EBMT 2016 will be the introduction of the first pharmacists’ day, which aims to highlight the important role played by our pharmacist colleagues in our domains of interest.
Here at EBMT, our goal is to enable every attendee to design a personalised Annual Meeting program taking benefit of modern technologies. Please book your agenda for Valencia and stay tuned because the best is yet to come!
Please enjoy the summer holidays. I am looking forward to catching-up with you in the near future and, in the meantime, please do not forget to follow the EBMT news on Twitter @TheEBMT and @Mohty_EBMT.
